John Milton; Paradise Lost, Book II, 299-309

Which when Beelzebub perceiv’d, then whom,

Satan except, none higher sat, with grave

Aspect he rose, and in his rising seem’d

A Pillar of State; deep on his Front engraven

Deliberation sat and public care;

And Princely counsel in his face yet shon,

Majestic though in ruin: sage he stood

With Atlantean shoulders fit to bear

The weight of mightiest Monarchies; his look

Drew audience and attention still as Night

Or Summers Noon-tide air, while thus he spake.

I now think, Love is rather deaf, than blind;

For else it could not be,

That She,

Whom I adore so much, should so slight me

And cast my love behind;

I’m sure my language to her as sweet,

And every close did meet,

In sentence of as subtle feet,

As hath the youngest He,

That sits in shadow of Apollo’s tree.

Oh buy my conscious fears,

That fly my thoughts between,

Tell me that she hath seen

My hundreds of gray hairs,

Told seven and forty years,

Read so much waist, as she cannot embrace

My mountain belly and my rocky face;

And all these through her eyes, have stopp’d her ears.
